What is LiDAR? Let's have a further discussion.

LiDAR - light detection and ranging - is a remote sensing method used to examine the Earth's surface.

LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure the distance to Earth (variable distance). These light pulses, combined with other data recorded by airborne systems, generate precise three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and the features of its surface.

What is LiDAR

LiDAR

LiDAR instruments mainly consist of lasers, scanners, and dedicated GPS receivers. Airplanes and helicopters are the most common platforms for acquiring lidar data over a wide area. The two types of lidar are topographic and bathymetric. Topographic lidars typically use near-infrared lasers to map land, while bathymetric lidars can also measure seafloor and riverbed heights using water-permeable green light. In contrast, LiDAR provides accurate 3D measurements from short to long distances, even in challenging weather and lighting conditions. The technology can be combined with other sensory data to more reliably represent static and moving objects in the vehicle environment.

Application of LiDAR

LiDAR systems enable scientists and mapping professionals to examine natural and man-made environments with accuracy, precision and flexibility. Many scientists are using lidar to make more accurate coastline maps, to make digital elevation models for geographic information systems to assist in emergency operations, and many other applications.

Deepth LiDAR Can Detect

Much of the initial use of lidar was to measure water depth. Depending on the clarity of the water, the lidar can measure depths from 0.9m to 40m with a vertical accuracy of 15cm and a horizontal accuracy of 2.5m.

Advantages of LiDAR

Several key advantages of lidar include: Data can be collected quickly with very high accuracy. Surface data has a higher sample density. High sample density improves results for some applications, such as floodplain delineation.
